Summary

German semiotician, artist, editor of “Design and Planning” and co-editor of “Zeitschrift für Semiotik”.

In June 1966 he organized in collaboration with Peter Seitz a conference Planning and Design 66 . At the time he was employed by both the University of waterloo,Canada and Hochshule Fur Gestaltung, Ulm. The conference was devoted to the possibilities of designing with the computer and forged a connection between computer artists in North America and Germany.

Biography

1950 Studied painting under Prof. Ugo Capocchini, Accademia Belle Arti Florenz.
1953 Internship with Otl Aicher, at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG, College of Design) in Ulm (Germany) (took lectures from Josef Albers, Helene Nonne-Schmidt, Max Bill, and Walter Zeischegg). Studied Visual Communication (with Otl Aicher, Tomás Maldonado, and Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart).
1957 Graduated from HfG(Ulm).
1962 Studied psychology, design, and communication science at Michigan State University, East Lansing (USA) for his Ph.D. – Taught computer graphics in the United States and Canada (Waterloo).
1967 onwards Lecturer at the HfG (Ulm) until it’s closing in 1972.
1972 onwards Lecturer in semiotics at the College of Design at Schwäbisch Gmünd (Germany).
1975 – 77 professor of social psychology and semiology at the University of Göttingen.
1977 – 93 Professor of Theory of Visual Communication, University of Arts Berlin.
1989 onwards Resumed his artistic activities with collages (exhibitions in Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden, Ulm and abroad).
