Joan Truckenbrod has had 20 solo exhibitions, and work included in 55 group exhibitions since since 1976, and is found in many private and public collections. Among the Pioneers at Digital Art Museum she shared an interest, as with Laurence Gartel, in early video paint systems. However she started with an algorithmic approach that led to some of her best-known early works, including experiments with image transfer to fabrics. The explorations using video paint systems in 1984 have developed into a natural progression through the available paint system technologies to the present day.
