Description

This image co-authored by José Luiz Aguirre and Estevam Roberto Serafim.

Its original Portuguese title is A Mulher que não ê B.B (literally, The Woman Who Is Not B.B.).

In this title, Cordeiro refers to Brigitte Bardot, the sexy French actress who was triumphing in the 1960s. The image shows a young Vietnamese woman in distress over her sufferings in the war of the USA against North Vietnam. As one of a series of images Cordeiro did during the years from 1968 or 1969 to 1973, he used image-processing software to transform a photographic image. Processing was done by applying mathematical operations to photographs in digitized format. Operations were usually defined by mathematical operations like the “derivative” of an image. Cordeiro often connected political overtones with his work. Here he contrasts the glamour of the cinematic spectacle with the horrors of the war – another form of contemporary spectacle, if you like.
