Dr. Herbert W. Franke –a phycisist, science fiction author, pioneer of computer art, aesthetic theorist, and even cave explorer – over many decades brought together two collections of digital art. In 2007 (?). they came into the possession of Kunsthalle Bremen through generous support by Ernst von Siemens Stiftung and the Kulturstiftung des Bundes und der Länder, Germany.
The first collection contains Franke’s own art. It starts with electronic graphics in the mid 1950s and later extends in large number to digital imagery.
The second collection consists of works from the enormous travelling show “Impulse. Auf dem Wege zur Computerkunst”. This exhibition existed in three variants that were shown in many countries around the globe between 1970 and 1984. The project of this travelling show had been made possible through the engagement of the German Goethe Institute.
