As a cultural institution, the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe holds a unique position in the world. There are only two more institutions of similar kinds of activity and presentation: the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Biennale in Venice. Whereas the Biennale is a bi-annual changing exhibition, the Pompidou is an institution with permanent and changing shows.
ZKM responds to the rapid developments in the field of information technology and today’s changing social structures. Its work combines production and research, exhibitions and events, coordination and documentation.
For 24 years, from 1999 to 2023, ZKM was directed by Prof. Peter Weibel, artist, curator, author, media theorist, leading person in media theory and practice world-wide.
