The book gives an historical account of computer art and touches upon basics of computer systems, including input- and output-devices. It focuses on visual arts, but also contains chapters on computer animation, music and poetry.

The first edition was published by Bruckmann, Munich in 1971 in German and was translated the same year by Phaidon Press, London. The second, revised and enlarged edition was published in 1985 by Springer Verlag, Heidelberg, Berlin, New York (ISBN: 0-387-15149-4) in German.
